In terms of classification, the globally-renowned Agaricus systematist, Dr. Heinemann, has categorized the mushroom as Agaricus blazei Murrill. This name, “Himematsutake,” was accepted and disseminated by the Japanese Society of Mycological Sciences, and it was officially included in Japanese publications by 1987. It is crucial to differentiate between Himematsutake and the broader term “Agaricus mushroom,” as the Agaricus genus contains over 100 species, including Himematsutake.
Research into the anti-tumor effects of mushrooms initiated in 1965, with substantial contributions towards the study of Himematsutake. The mushroom’s anti-cancer properties don’t directly act on tumor cells but rather stimulate the immune system, activating macrophages, T-helper cells, NK cells, and other immune cells.

Scientists have identified various active anti-tumor ingredients in Himematsutake, including β-glucan, heteroglycan, peptide glucan, proteoglycan, among others. A small RNA with notable anti-tumor activity has also been isolated from the fruiting bodies of Himematsutake.
Pioneering researchers like Dr. Hitoshi Ito, an associate professor at the Medical Faculty of Mie University and a leading researcher in the study of Himematsutake in Japan, have helped identify Himematsutake strains with high anti-cancer activity, such as Iwade strain 101, registered as ITO-S.

The Himematsutake mushroom, now an FDA-approved health supplement, utilizes a patented “Cell Wall Disruption Method” to maximize its nutritional potential. Research published in “Anticancer Research” discussed the ATOM complex, a polysaccharide-protein complex derived from Himematsutake. The complex demonstrated substantial anti-tumor activity against four established types of mouse tumors. The authors suggested that the mechanism underlying this effect is not direct cytotoxic action on the tumor cells but host-mediated immunological mechanisms, including macrophage activation and alterations of the third component of complement.
